Southampton captain Jose Fonte has spoken of his desire to carry forward his unbeaten goal-scoring record into Southampton’s Boxing Day clash against the in-form Arsenal.
Whenever Fonte has scored for the Saints, his side have gone on to secure at least one point – on 14 occasions.
Fonte has scored just one goal this season in Southampton’s 2-2 draw to Leicester, but has been unfortunate not to extend his tally further.
This season I could have had at least five – three goal-line clearances – (David) De Gea made a great save from a header I had, then against Stoke they cleared one off the line, Aston Villa one off the line too, so I’m a bit disappointed that I don’t already have five goals this season which would have been fantastic for me.
Fonte has also voiced his displeasure at Saints’ tendency to leak goals this season, claiming that they must go back to basics in order to carry out better results after his side have gone six consecutive games without a win.
We need to go back to basics and be really, really hard to beat. If we do that then we can win any game because we will always create chances.
Can Fonte lead Southampton to a momentous victory against the Gunners this evening?
