Valladolid keen to keep hold of Saints target Salisu

Real Valladolid sporting director Miguel Angel Gomez has insisted that the club are keen to keep hold of Mohammed Salisu in January amid speculation linking him with a move to Southampton and Manchester United.

The 20-year-old defender has been in good form this season, and as a consequence of his €12 million release clause in Spain, he could be available for a bargain price in the New Year.

Valladolid are aware that Salisu could depart in January – another board member, David Espinar, recently admitted that it is a possibility – but remain hopeful that he will stay.

Sporting director Gomez discussed the Ghanaian centre-back’s position at the La Liga club. As quoted by Pucela Fichajes, he said:

The club is no longer going to talk about Salisu anymore, we want him to focus and we want to protect him.

We want him to continue with us and we are happy with him. There is a very close relationship with his agents and with the kid, the club is no longer going to generate more pressure around him.

Salisu is having a good season in Spain, and it comes as no surprise to see him linked with a move to the Premier League.

At just €12 million, he is affordable for most clubs in the top leagues of European football, and he is likely to be the subject of plenty of interest in the January transfer window.

Southampton are hardly expected to have lots of funds at their disposal in January and recruiting Salisu for a cheap fee could improve their chances of survival this term.
