Jannik Vestergaard is the highest-placed defender in the whole of the Premier League in Sky Sports’ Power Rankings.
After every weekend of top-flight action, the division’s players are separated into a pecking order, which continues to alternate based on their current form and showings previously in the season. These rankings are decided by 35 different statistics.
Southampton have had a good start to the campaign, and three of their key men feature in the top 20.
Moussa Djenepo is ranked as the 20th best player in the Premier League so far this season, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn comes in with an impressive ranking of 15th.

Most surprisingly, though, Vestergaard holds a position just outside of the top 10. The Denmark international is recognised as the best-performing defender in the whole of the Premier League so far this term and ranks at 11th.

It’s good, either way, to see our players given recognition for their strong start to the season. However, it’s undoubtedly a bit of a peculiar one, as arguably our least-reliable starting player ranks as the 11th best player in the division in the opening weeks of the Premier League, according to some metrics…
After each week of the season, we’ve been giving our very own Power Rankings, based solely on opinion, about just who Southampton’s top five performers are. You can take a look at who we reckon the best players have been this season here.
