Victor Wanyama left Tottenham earlier this year on a free transfer, ending his four-year association in north London.

The midfielder moved to the MLS to sign for the Montreal Impact and has since made 18 league appearances.

The Kenyan only managed 15 top-flight appearances for Spurs in his last two campaigns, falling out of favour under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

Wanyama reportedly forced through his Southampton exit back in 2016 after stalling over a new deal, with the Saints collecting £12.96million for his services.

However, despite a promising start, things didn’t work out for the midfielder, with Southampton eventually having the last laugh.

The 29-year-old, who is now worth £5.85m, was a regular at St Mary’s during the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns, with his impressive displays catching Spurs’ eye.

Wanyama averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.12 and 7.02 during those seasons on the south coast. His first season with Tottenham saw that rating climb to 7.21, however, following the 2016/17 season, his form gradually declined.

The midfielder’s final season in the capital saw him finish with a lowly 6.01 rating, proving that on the whole, the Saints, even if they weren’t in total control, were ultimately right to cash in on the player four years earlier.

Wanyama made 97 appearances for both the Saints and Spurs, but the ratings show that Southampton got the most out of the no-nonsense midfielder.

Defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu has turned out to be Wanyama’s replacement, joining from Chelsea for £5million.

The Spaniard has been praised by both Saints supporters and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl over the last 12 months, underlying another great piece of transfer business by the club.

Wanyama’s departure may have caused some worry at the time, but as the years have gone on, the Saints have, as they do so well, adapted and have turned out to be on the better end of a deal once again.
