Southampton face fight for Darwin Nunez

Italian publication Calciomercato.it are reporting that Southampton have been joined by numerous clubs in their pursuit of Darwin Núñez.

Widely linked for numerous weeks with the UD Almeria striker, the Saints seemed to have things all their own way for a period of time.

However, now they have been joined by Bundesliga side Wolfsburg as well as fellow Premier League clubs Sheffield United, and Brighton & Hove Albion in the race for the forward.

Having reportedly already made an offer of €12m for the Uruguayan, Ralph Hassenhüttl will remain confident of landing his man, although Wolfsburg reportedly had a bid of their own rejected as they attempt to prize the talented striker away from the Spanish Segunda side.

Calciomercato also claims Almeria are holding out for their €25m valuation from any of ht interested parties and with numerous clubs in the running, it may be a wise move from the Spanish club to start somewhat of a bidding war for their star man.

Nunez enjoyed a superb first season in Europe after arriving from Uruguayan side Penarol, scoring 16 goals in 30 matches in all competitions, form which has drawn the attention from some of Europe’s top leagues.

His form also saw him earn his first international cap as he made a scoring debut in October against South American rivals Peru.

Hassenhüttl is clearly looking to add to his striking options, with Danny Ings, Che Adams and Michael Obafemi as the Austrian’s current crop.
