Southampton have reportedly joined the race for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie, according to a report from Transfermarkt.

The midfielder looks set to leave the German side this summer with a number of clubs, such as Leicester and Newcastle, apparently joining Saints plus sides from Spain, Germany and France in the race to sign the American international.

McKennie cemented himself as a starter in the middle of the park for Schalkeand performed very well in a somewhat disappointing season for The German side.

It is believed that the 21-year-old is wanting to make a switch this summer and that the Premier League is his preferred destination.

Given that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is looking to leave Southampton, a replacement will be needed and McKennie could be that man

Chris Williams, who knows German football as well as pretty much any British journalist, believes that McKennie would “fit Southampton like a glove”.

Schalke’s financial issues are well known so they are likely to sell the American star, but whether that’s to Southampton or somewhere else remains to be seen.
