Southampton and Celtic are two of the clubs who are interested in signing Rapid Vienna midfielder Dejan Ljubicic this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Championship high-flyers Brentford are also said to be keen on signing the Austrian star, as are Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

The defensive midfielder could, according to the report in the Mail, be available for around £2m as he only has one year left on contract and has decided that he is not interested in signing an extension as he has his heart set on a move to a bigger club.

With doubts about the long-term future of former Saints captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, it makes sense for Southampton to be looking at new midfielders and at a time when finances may be tight, a move for a cheaper option like Ljubicic could make sense.

Saints will back themselves to win any transfer race with Brentford, Celtic and Rangers, given thier place as a secure Premier League side, but it remains to be seen if they decide to make an offer.
