Southampton showing interest in Jose Sa

Southampton showing interest in Jose Sa

Southampton are one of a number of clubs thought to be interested in Olympiacos goalkeeper Jose Sa this summer.

Greek outlet SDNA report that Southampton, along with Crystal Palace and West Ham, are keen on a deal for the Portuguese stopper ahead of next season.

The report claims that they have been following Sa throughout the campaign, with the 27-year-old impressing in Greece.

This could come as bad news for current Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The Englishman has been the second-choice shot-stopper this season after losing his place in the side early on to Alex McCarthy. Gunn has played 10 games in the Premier League this season, recording an unimpressive WhoScored rating of 6.19.

If Southampton brought Sa to St. Mary’s in the summer it could be a case of him competing with McCarthy for the number one shirt. If this is the situation that develops in pre-season, Gunn could find himself unable to even make the matchday squad.

This means that Gunn could need to consider finding a move elsewhere, whether that be on a permanent or loan deal. At the age of 24, Gunn needs to be playing regular football in order to develop his game, as real match experience helps goalkeepers to improve and learn on the job.

Jose Sa and Alex McCarthy being ahead of him in the pecking order could stunt his development and this is why Gunn needs to potentially pursue a move away to further his career.
