Southampton’s reported interest in Bristol Rovers centre-back Alfie Kilgour could open the door for Jannik Vestergaard to leave this summer.
According to the Bristol Post, Southampton and Bournemouth have both been keeping tabs on Kilgour ahead of a possible summer swoop for the talented young defender.
This comes after the news last month that Southampton are looking to sell Vestergaard for a fee in the region of £20m at the end of the season.
Kilgour is only 21 and has played an incredible 43 games in all competitions for Rovers so far this season, including 33 starts in League One. He has been a consistent figure at the back for the Gas, producing some top performances despite his young age, averaging an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.82 as a centre-back in League One.
Whilst the step up to the Premier League is a massive one, Kilgour could benefit greatly from being a rotation option for Southampton. He could learn from the first-team players, watching how they train and play in order to develop his own game. Southampton could bring him in to act as a back-up behind first-choice defenders, much like Jannik Vestergaard is doing at the moment.
This would then allow the club to cash in on Vestergaard knowing that they have a replacement through the door. If they sold him before signing another centre back they could then run the risk of being left short at the back next season.
