Former Celtic coach Alan Thompson says that Fraser Forster would be a great signing if the club can sign him permanently from Southampton.
Thompson has outlined all the reasons why Forster could be the perfect signing between the sticks for Celtic in the summer, with the shot-stopper currently on loan to the Scottish giants.
Speaking exclusively to our sister site Read Celtic, Thompson said:
I know what Neil [Lennon] thinks of him because Neil and I brought him to Celtic when he first arrived, before he moved on to Southampton. We know what he’s all about, he’s a fantastic goalkeeper, he’s got a great attitude, he’s a big character and he’s mentally tough, so he fits the bill to be a Celtic number one if they can sort the numbers out.
If Forster does fit the bill for Celtic, as Thompson says, then it could hint at them making a permanent offer for the goalkeeper this summer. If they can afford to sign him, it could be a very good deal for all involved to make his stay in Scotland permanent.
Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn are already ahead of him in the pecking order at St Mary’s and Celtic would need to replace him if he does not come back. So, if a deal can be agreed, Southampton could get an unwanted player off their wage bill and Celtic could lock down a key position in their team for the next few years.
On paper, this appears to be the ideal solution to Forster’s future. However, it remains to be seen how much Southampton will demand for his services and whether or not Celtic will be able to afford it ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
This means that we could need to wait until the window opens to see if an agreement is viable between the two clubs.
