A number of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on goalkeeper Alex McCarthy following his performance against Newcastle at the weekend.
McCarthy was in excellent form as he made numerous impressive stops, only for Newcastle to score a late winner in the match. Allan Saint-Maximin scored with just over 10 minutes to go to win the game for Newcastle, leaving McCarthy’s efforts wasted.
The English shot-stopper saved a penalty from Matt Ritchie in the first half, diving low down to his right to tip Ritchie’s strong effort away from the bottom corner. He also made a sensational triple save, stopping Dwight Gayle’s initial effort before making two quick stops from Miguel Almiron.
Southampton have now lost five of their last six matches in all competitions and are in the bottom half of the Premier League table, as well as being out of the cups.
These Saints fans found something to be positive about, though, as they reacted to McCarthy’s display.
