A number of Southampton fans have reacted to Alex McCarthy’s penalty save against Newcastle at the weekend.
Some Saints supporters have taken to Twitter to heap praise on the shot-stopper for his excellent save from the spot against Newcastle.
Southampton lost the game 1-0, but it could have been worse if not for the heroics of McCarthy in between the sticks.
The penalty was awarded by VAR after they deemed that Sofiane Boufal had handled the ball in the box whilst trying to bring it down on his chest. Matt Ritchie stepped up and McCarthy guessed the right way before brilliantly keeping the ball out with a one-handed save down low to his right.
Allan Saint-Maximin later won the game for Newcastle as he dispossessed Yan Valery in the Southampton half before poking the ball into the corner, giving McCarthy no chance.
