Southampton fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon after playing the best part of an hour with 10-men.
It was the visitors who had the first chance of the match as they forced Alex McCarthy into a brilliant triple save in the Southampton goal.
The game changed midway through the first-half as Moussa Djenepo was shown a red card for a late challenge on Issac Hayden after the referee checked the monitor via a VAR recommendation.
The Magpies were making the most of their advantage with Dwight Gayle missing two guilt-edged chances before Jamaal Lascelles had a goal disallowed for offside.
There was more VAR drama to come as a penalty was awarded for Newcastle soon after due to Sofiane Boufal handling the ball in the area.
However, McCarthy made yet another magnificent save to deny Matt Ritchie from 12 yards.
Saints’ resistance was eventually broken though, as Saint-Maximin punished a poor mistake from Yan Valery to give Newcastle the three points.
This result moves Newcastle above Southampton in the Premier League with the gap to the bottom three remaining at seven points.
