A number of Southampton fans have started to speculate over who their next captain could be.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is the current club captain but has reportedly turned down a contract offer from the club. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham and could be on his way out of the door in the summer.
Tottenham are said to have made Hojbjerg one of their top transfer targets heading into the next window. This, along with Hojbjerg turning down an extended deal, suggests that the midfielder could leave St. Mary’s ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
Hojbjerg will only have 12 months left on his contract come the summer, which means that Southampton could be in a tricky situation if he continues to refuse new contracts.
If he does leave Southampton at the end of the season, the club would need to name a new club captain and replace Hojbjerg.
