Southampton were left ruining what could have been as they lost 2-1 to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
At 2-1 down, Jack Stephens broke out from defence and carried the ball into the Burnley box before seeing his cross blocked behind for a corner. However, the Southampton players were adamant that they should have been given a penalty for handball against Ben Mee.
Stephens’ cross struck the arm of Mee as he went to block the cross, but it was deemed to be in a natural position to the side of his body and that he was trying to move it out of the way. VAR looked at the incident and opted against overturning the onfield referee’s decision of no penalty.
Southampton were then unable to get back into the game and fell to defeat. Despite the loss, Southampton moved above Newcastle in the table on goal difference.
