Jack Cork backs Danny Ings to make England squad

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork has backed Southampton forward Danny Ings to earn a call up to the England national team.

Cork says that he sees no reason as to why Ings should not be included in the England squad, with the Saints striker currently on 17 goals for the season.

Ings and Cork are set to face up against each other at the weekend as Southampton host Burnley at St. Mary’s on Saturday.

Speaking to the Press Association, as transcribed by FourFourTwo, Cork said:

Fair play to Danny, he’s been great. He’s scored a lot of goals for Southampton. You look at what he’s done for that club this season and you put a lot of it down to him.

Looking at international things for him, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be included.

Ings’ form in the Premier League this season suggests that he could have a good chance of being called up to the England squad. He is producing consistently in the top-flight ahead of other English forwards. Ings has scored 14 goals in the league, a total which no other eligible English player can beat.

Marcus Rashford, who played out wide for England, is the only player level with Ings on 14 goals. Tammy Abraham and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are just behind on 13 and 11 respectively, which shows that Gareth Southgate has plenty of quality to choose from in the centre-forward position.

This is not even taking Harry Kane, who has 11 Premier League goals, into consideration. The England captain is currently out injured and it is unclear as to whether or not he will be fit for the European Championships this summer. Either way, Ings appears to have a strong case on paper for his inclusion in the next squad.
