Southampton were left with a dilemma in the summer as they had three England international goalkeepers at the club.
Alex McCarthy, Angus Gunn and Fraser Forster – who have all been capped by England – were at the club at the end of the 2018/19 season and all made appearances during the campaign.
Gunn ended the season as Southampton’s number one, but McCarthy was the favoured shot-stopper for the first few months of the season. Forster was also handed a chance to impress by Ralph Hasenhuttl towards the end of the year.
In the summer, the club opted to let Forster leave the club and keep McCarthy and Gunn to battle for the number one spot.
Forster joined his former club Celtic on loan until the end of the season, where he has been playing regular football up in Scotland.
