Southampton are enjoying an impressive Premier League campaign, despite a rocky start to the season.
The Saints endured a tough first few months of the year and were in the bottom three after 17 games. However, they have managed to completely turn their form around and are now only outside of the top 10 on goal difference with 13 games left to play in the season.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have picked up 16 points from their last eight games and are a comfortable seven points above the drop zone, which suggests that they shoud be able to avoid relegation this term.
Every year, FIFA release updates around February time, handing out winter upgrades to players based on their performances during the season.
With that in mind, here are four Southampton players who could be in with a shot of getting one due to their impressive displays in the Premier League.
Let’s start off with a fairly obvious contender. Ings has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Southampton this season and has recorded a WhoScored rating of 7 for his performances in the Premier League.
His incredible form for the Saints throughout the campaign suggests that he is deserving of a winter upgrade on FIFA. Ings’ current rating is 76, but we think he deserves a score of 80 or above.
Stephens struggled to get into the Southampton side at the start of the season but has now made himself a regular in the team. The English centre-back is calm on the ball and able to read the game well – leading to interceptions and tackles to break up opposition attacks.
His current FIFA rating is only 74, making him a Silver, but we think he deserves to have a Gold card (75 or above) in the winter upgrades to reflect his recent form for Southampton in the Premier League.
McCarthy has been superb for Southampton between the sticks this season.
He took over from Angus Gunn after the 9-0 defeat to Leicester and has been pivotal in Southampton’s upturn in form. His consistently brilliant performances in goal have helped win Southampton points, with his excellent reflexes and dominance of his penalty area.
His current FIFA rating is 76, on par with Gunn, and we feel as though his performances warrant an upgrade so that he is ahead of his fellow shot-stopper.
On WhoScored ratings this season, Moussa Djenepo is Southampton’s fourth-best performer in the Premier League.
However, he is only a 74 on FIFA, with 14 players ahead of him in the Southampton squad. This suggests that he is worthy of an upgrade to at least put him on par with some of his fellow teammates.
We think that an upgrade to 76 or 77 could be fair for the winger, who has scored twice this season for the Saints.
