Southampton were knocked out of the FA Cup as they lost 3-2 to Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The Saints had a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to go in the match, but ultimately let it slip as goals from Lucas Moura and Heung-Min Son ensured Tottenham’s place in the next round.
There was also a horrible moment in the match for Southampton, as James Ward-Prowse was stretchered off in the 40th minute. Spurs defender Ryan Sessegnon, unfortunately, caught Ward-Prowse on the follow-through of a challenge, causing a deep cut on the midfielder’s knee.
Jannik Vestergaard was brought on to replace Ward-Prowse, with Ralph Hasenhuttl then moving Jack Stephens over to right-back for the rest of the match.
Vestergaard, however, struggled to deal with the threat of the Tottenham attack and was partly culpable for the last two goals of the game. He was too easily beaten by Moura for his strike, before allowing the ball to go through his legs leading to Son winning a penalty.
These Southampton fans reacted to his performance…
Twitter: Last night proved that Ralph got rid of the wrong cb as vestergaard should have gone not Maya. #saintsfc (@saintsmith80)
Twitter: Believe it or not in 2020 Gunn and Vestergaard are still a liability #SaintsFC (@newington13)
Twitter: Bizarre how fans still rate Vestergaard. Rash, no pace and liability. Should of sold to Leicester when we had the chance. #saintsfc (@Freddie_matee)
Twitter: So next game we won’t have to play Vestergaard. So there’s a bonus. #saintsfc (@glennvardy)
Twitter: Also it’s amazingly clear that Vestergaard cannot do it at this level. #saintsfc (@ggabronco)
Twitter: We had the chances to win so only ourselves to blame. Gunn, no right back, Vestergaard… Poor squad cost us. #saintsfc (@andydavis1978)
Twitter: The second and third goal really have passed Vestergaard by. Needs to be sold #saintsfc (@TheSaintCentre)
Twitter: Leicester wanted Vestergaard for £18m… and we said no 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 #saintsfc (@andydavis1978)
