Southampton exited the FA Cup after a cruel 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in the fourth round replay on Wednesday evening.
Saints started the match very brightly with Hugo Lloris having to make a number of solid stops to deny the visitors.
However, Spurs broke the deadlock against the run of play after just 12 minutes as Tanguy Ndombele’s effort from the edge of the box deflected off Jack Stephens and into the back of the net.
This didn’t halt Southampton’s momentum, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men continuing to create countless opportunities, most notably Danny Ings who smacked an effort against the crossbar.
Saints got the equaliser they deserved 10 minutes before half-time as Nathan Redmond had an initial shot parried by Lloris before Shane Long slotted the rebound home.
There were worrying scenes to follow though as James Ward-Prowse was stretchered off after a clash with Ryan Sessegnon that left the 25-year old in visible agony.
The second-half started in a similar fashion with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sofiane Boufal missing great chances before Lucas Moura wasted a rare opening for Spurs with a header wide.
Hasenhutl’s men then took the lead with less than 20 minutes remaining following a blistering counter attack led by Redmond who dribbled past multiple Spurs players before finding Ings who guided the ball into the bottom corner.
The hosts then equalised themselves soon after courtesy of Moura who provided the necessary skill and finish to put the game in the balance.
Spurs then went on to take the lead late on as Angus Gunn was adjudged to have fouled Son Heung-min in the box, with the South Korean international converting the resulting penalty.
