Hasenhuttl provides injury update on Ward-Prowse

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided an update on the injury to James Ward-Prowse against Tottenham.

Hasenhuttl has revealed that Ward-Prowse has suffered a deep cut, after being stretchered off the pitch against Tottenham following a challenge from Ryan Sessegnon.

He has also confirmed that he could even be fit to face Burnley after the Premier League winter break, speaking to BBC Solent’s Adam Blackmore.

READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT

When Ward-Prowse was being stretchered off in pain, you could have been forgiven for worrying that his season could be over. He went down clutching his right knee when, in real-time, it appeared as though Sessegnon caught him on the left side of his body. This made me concerned that it could have been a twist of the knee or another serious issue leading to months on the sidelines, but I am clearly not a trained medical professional!

Hasenhuttl has now allayed those fears by revealing that it was “just” a deep cut, which may still be just as painful but not as damaging as, for example, an ACL injury.

This means that he could now be back in contention to play at Burnley, although Kyle Walker-Peters now has two weeks to prepare to potentially make his Southampton debut.

Oriol Romeu filled in alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the midfield and, in our opinion, was too clumsy at times with his tackling and passing. He committed a series of fouls before being booked and gave away sloppy passes to gift Tottenham back possession.

Hopefully, Ward-Prowse is able to return against Burnley and take up his place in the midfield, rather than at right-back.
