Southampton player ratings: Liverpool (A)

Southampton’s run of four straight away victories came to an end following a 4-0 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The league leaders had a couple of guilt edged chances midway through the first-half but were denied by some great saves by Alex McCarthy before they had a penalty appeal turned down.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were giving as good as they got with Moussa Djenepo having a pop from distance that was well saved by Alisson.

Saints were ending the half really well with their press on the opposition leading to attempts for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Danny Ings, Shane Long and Nathan Redmond on the Liverpool goal.

The hosts broke the deadlock soon after the break as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired into the back of the net from the edge of the box moments after Danny Ings had a penalty appeal waved away.

Liverpool then thought they doubled their lead soon after as Mo Salah slotted past McCarthy but the offside flag was up with VAR confirming the decision.

They did eventually get their second on the hour mark as Jordan Henderson finished a Roberto Firmino cutback.

The game was over with 20 minutes left as Liverpool went 3-0 up with Salah getting on the end of a Henderson pass before dinking the ball over McCarthy.

Salah then added a fourth a late on as he forced the ball home from close range.

On a day where the scoreline wasn’t a fair reflection of the Saints performances, here’s how we rated the players:
