Cedric set to be out for three weeks with ligament damage

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Cedric Soares is set to be out for up to three weeks with a knee injury.

Cedric suffered ligament damage in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday and is now poised to miss three weeks of action for the Saints…

The Portuguese international has nailed down his place at right-back in recent weeks, but is now facing a spell on the sidelines heading into February.

READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT

Cedric is out of contract at the end of the season and that is a situation that Southampton will need to make a decision on. Will they let him leave for free? His performances this season suggest that he deserves a new deal, with him currently holding the highest WhoScored rating for a fullback in Southampton’s squad this season.

This suggests that Southampton should be looking to tie him down to an extended contract. However, it is impossible to know whether the club can afford to, or if the player himself is willing to commit his future to St. Mary’s. It is a situation that could become clearer as we get closer to the summer, as he would become a free agent at the end of the season.

If I was Ralph Hasenhuttl and had the ability to sign him to a deal, I would do it. Given the stats provided above and his experience in the Premier League, he is a useful asset to the squad and deserves to stay.
