Southampton threw away a 2-0 half-time lead at home to Wolves to lose 3-2 on a bitterly disappointing afternoon on the south coast.

Saints broke the deadlock after James Ward-Prowse’s indirect free-kick evaded everyone until it got to the far post when Jan Bednarek produced a striker-like finish on the half volley.

The hosts doubled their advantage later in the first-half when a superb Cedric Soares cross was expertly headed home by Shane Long.

Wolves halved the deficit against the run of play early in the second-half when an Adama Traore cross was well controlled and finished by Pedro Neto.

Parity was restored just after an hour when a combination of Jack Stephens and Cedric upended Jonny in the box with VAR awarding a penalty before Raul Jimenez coolly slotted past Alex McCarthy.

The visitors took the lead with 15 minutes left on the counter attack with Traore bursting into the Saints box, laying it off for Jimenez who got his second of the game.

This was Saints’ first defeat in seven matches as the side stay in 12th place in the Premier League in what was the perfect example of a game of two halves.
