Southampton willing to let Vestergaard leave if they sign a centre-back

Southampton are reportedly willing to allow Jannik Vestergaard to leave the club this month if they are able to sign a centre-back to replace him.

According to The Mirror, via HITC, Southampton will sanction an exit for Vestergaard if they can land Mohammed Salisu from Real Valladolid or Marc Guehi from Chelsea.

The report claims that if they can sign a centre-back to add to their squad, they will finally allow Vestergaard to move on from St. Mary’s.

This appears to be very smart business from the Saints. Vestergaard has lost his place in the side, which shows that he is not in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans, and it is doing him no good sat on the sidelines not playing any minutes. A move away, on loan or otherwise, would be best for all parties involved, in order for him to play regularly.

However, Southampton know that letting him go would leave them short in the centre-back position, which is why they want to strengthen in that area before green lighting any move. The club now need to make headway on their own targets, meaning that Vestergaard will need to sit tight and be patient whilst Southampton work to bring in someone to replace him.

The report does state that Salisu has a £10.2m release clause at Valladolid and that Southampton are very interested in a deal. It will be very interesting to see what happens with Salisu and Vestergaard and where they will end up come the start of February.
