Genk to demand £7.5m for Saints target Maehle

Genk have reportedly slapped a £7.5m price tag on the head of Southampton transfer target Joakim Maehle this month.

According to Voetbal Primeur, via HITC, Genk are willing to part ways with the defender if Southampton, or any other club, stump up £7.5m for his services.

The report claims that Crystal Palace are also interested in the right-back, as Southampton and the Eagles both look to bolster their squads before the end of the window.

There is no doubting that Southampton need to make some additions to their defence this month. They have conceded the second-most goals in the division, despite a recent run of good form. In order to make sure they do not drop back down to their previous subpar levels, they need to add one or two to freshen the side up.

Cedric Soares is out of contract at the end of the season and there are still huge question marks over Yan Valery’s ability at this level. This means that bringing in a right-back to compete for a place in the starting XI would make sense for Southampton.

Maehle has impressed in the Champions League for Genk, which suggests that he has what it takes to compete at the top level. For £7.5m, Southampton would not be risking a great deal, financially, by signing him either.
