Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is not having a particularly positive season at Southampton, and his performance against West Ham United at the weekend prompted plenty of criticism.
The Denmark international failed to control the midfield as the Hammers came away with a 1-0 win courtesy of a first-half goal from Sebastien Haller.
Hojbjerg captained the team for the duration of the 90 minutes but noticeably struggled, much to the frustration of these Southampton fans…
Twitter: Leaving Hojbjerg on the pitch the way he’s played tonight is actually cruel from Ralph. Abysmal. #saintsfc (@tomholland28)
Twitter: I know he’s our captain but Hojbjerg needs dropped Too slow, ponderous and gives away possession #SaintsFc (@sandymackinnon)

Twitter: Hojbjerg is supposed to be captain. Yet he has been diabolical all season. Ings the only positive really. Bring on… https://t.co/73ClioCQJZ (@HarryStokes_93)

Read Southampton’s verdict
Hojbjerg’s form appeared to somewhat improve in the games against Norwich City and Newcastle United, but he was shocking on Saturday.
He has had a poor season, and his inclusion in the starting line-up is only justified by two things at this stage: the fact that he is Ralph Hasenhuttl’s captain, and the glaring lack of alternatives in the middle of the park.
Hojbjerg’s future at Southampton is uncertain, but if he does indeed want to seek pastures new as his contract edges closer to its expiration date, he’ll need to improve and earn a step up.
