Southampton Power Rankings: GW16
Southampton were dealt a late blow as Newcastle United defeated them 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Saints travelled up north on the back of two consecutive wins in the Premier League following victories against Watford and Norwich City on home soil.
Newcastle, however, had also been in a strong vein of form and were looking to push into the top half of the table with a win.
After a goalless first 45 minutes, Saints continued to put pressure on the Magpies after the restart and eventually took the lead as Danny Ings latched onto a long ball from Jack Stephens to score.
Newcastle bounced back as the close of the match drew nearer, though, as Andy Carroll peeled off to the back stick before nodding the ball to Jonjo Shelvey, who made it three goals in three games.
Steve Bruce’s side came out on top with just minutes to spare as Sean Longstaff’s long-range drive was only parried by Alex McCarthy into the path of Federico Fernandez, who netted with ease.
After 16 matches of the Premier League season, we have picked out our top five performers of the campaign so far.
