The Three Stars: Watford (H)
Southampton picked up a massive three points against fellow relegation strugglers Watford, in what could be a key result in the long run for both sides.
It was a poor first-half, with both teams struggling to produce any real threat in front of goal, but Saints’ nervy defending let Ismaila Sarr fire Watford into the lead half way through the first 45. Saints remained poor and struggled to cause Watford any problems.
The saints came out a different team in the second half. They looked hungry and ready to fight for a result. They pressured and created many clear cut chances with Shane Long having his efforts tipped onto the bar by Ben Foster and then another cleared off the line by Craig Cathcart. A goal was on the way for the home side, as the home support urged their team on.
With just under 13 minutes to go, Danny Ings tucked home from close range after an impressive run from Moussa Djenepo. It didn’t take long for Southampton to gain the lead, with James Ward-Prowse whipping a sumptuous free kick into the top corner, which sealed the three points for the South Coast side.
The Three Stars
Sofiane Boufal – Made a real impact after coming off the bench, and caused problems for Watford in the second half. Was a key part in the win and should start against Norwich.
Danny Ings – Once again, Ings steps up when the team needed him most, another goal, as he continues his impressive run of goal scoring form.
James Ward-Prowse – Did really well in the middle of the park, and worked tirelessly throughout the match, and also scored the winning goal with a wonderful free kick.
