Southampton were cruelly denied a famous win at Arsenal after a late Gunners equaliser resulted in a hard-earned 2-2 draw.
Saints stunned the Emirates after just eight minutes when an inspired quick free-kick from Ryan Bertrand played in Danny Ings who calmly slotted home.
The scores were levelled against the run of play 10 minutes later when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s inital shot was blocked before Alexandre Lacazette finished the rebound.
The second-half started in frantic style with both sides having great chances including Aubameyang being denied by Alex McCarthy and Nathan Redmond’s strike being tipped over by Bernd Leno.
Saints restored their lead from the penalty spot after Ings was brought down by Kieran Tierney before James Ward-Prowse’s initial effort was saved but he put in the rebound.
Somehow, the visitors failed to add a third despite numerous chances to do so.
There was late heartache to come after Lacazette converted a cross at the far post in the 96th minute to equalise.
On a promising but ultimately disappointing afternoon, here’s how we rated the Southampton players:
