City suffer Angelino injury blow ahead of second Saints clash

Manchester City have been left to sweat about the condition of Angelino ahead of their second match against Southampton in a week.

Pep Guardiola fielded the summer signing at left-back for his side’s 3-1 win over Saints in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

Angelino impressed, and gave Southampton some problems down the wing, but saw his evening come to a premature end late on as he appeared to tweak his hamstring.

As such, the former PSV Eindhoven player was substituted off and hobbled down the tunnel rather gingerly, providing Guardiola with yet another injury concern to deal with.

With Oleksandr Zinchenko already sidelined, and Angelino now seemingly facing a race against time to be fit for Saturday, the responsibility at left-back will lie at Benjamin Mendy’s door against Southampton.

This is by no means a bad thing for City, though, with the Frenchman clearly an outstanding player who is capable of turning in exceptional performances at both ends of the pitch.

Angelino was, however, arguably the best player in the Carabao Cup tie, and the last thing Guardiola will want is more injuries.

Southampton, regardless of just who lines up for the hosts at the weekend, will need to be even better than at their best if they are to come away from the Etihad with anything.
