Southampton Player Ratings: Tottenham (A)

Southampton were disappointingly beaten 2-1 by 10-man Spurs in their first ever visit to the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Southampton’s preparations for this match were disrupted by an injury to Cedric in the warm-up with Jannik Vestergaard coming in to replace him.

Spurs broke the deadlock after 25 minutes when Tanguy Ndombele blasted the ball beyond Angus Gunn in the centre of the box.

Saints were then given some hope of a turnaround when Serge Aurier received his second booking for a foul on Ryan Bertrand and was shown his marching orders.

The equaliser came courtesy of a Hugo Lloris howler in the Spurs goal after dallying on the ball in the six-yard box, only to be closed down by Danny Ings who robbed the French keeper of the ball and easily found the back of the net.

Saints weren’t able to go into half-time level though as Harry Kane restored Tottenham’s lead soon after with a clincial finish into the bottom left corner of the net.

The second-half was full of Saints pressure against the 10-men but without finding the crucial final ball or finish to bring the scores level.

On what feels like a missed opportunity, here’s how we rated the Southampton players:
