Hojbjerg makes Shearer’s TOTW – did he impress at Sheffield United?

Alan Shearer named two Southampton players in his Premier League Team of the Week following the fifth batch of fixtures in 2019/20.

Saints came away with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United, and their former striker-turned-pundit was evidently impressed by the efforts of a couple of his old club’s players at Bramall Lane

Shearer believes Angus Gunn was the best-performing goalkeeper in the Premier League at the weekend. More surprisingly, though, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been selected by him for one of the two central midfield berths…

It’s nice to see our players receiving recognition for how good they’ve been as the early stages of the season have progressed.

However, it comes as something of a surprise to see Hojbjerg identified as one the Premier League’s best-performing midfielders at the weekend.

Make no mistake, the Saints captain had a good game and contributed with the composure, intelligence and consistency which have become synonymous with his role in the side.

But I’d argue that Oriol Romeu was the better of our two midfielders at Bramall Lane, as he broke up play effectively and protected the ball well, both with smart decisions in possession and clever reading of the game.

Either way, it’s good that Hojbjerg’s getting credit. It’s long overdue, and it should be exciting for Saints fans that he has not yet reached his top level this season…
