Angus Gunn has had a quietly impressive start to the new Premier League season, and he has helped the team tighten up their defensive unit.

The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in top-flight fixtures, with Ralph Hasenhuttl preferring him to Alex McCarthy as Southampton’s number one goalkeeper.

Gunn turned in yet another strong performance against Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon, as Saints came away from Bramall Lane with a 1-0 win and a clean sheet.

The former Manchester City man’s progress has gone somewhat under the radar, but according to data collected by statistics-based Twitter account The Other 14, he has a higher save percentage (76%) than any other goalkeeper outside of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ teams.

Read Southampton’s verdict

It’s no real surprise to see Gunn top this pile of goalkeepers. He’s been great for us this season, and I’d argue that he’s been our second-best performer behind Oriol Romeu in the first five games.

He made vital saves against Sheffield United to keep our clean sheet intact, and he was also excellent against Manchester United before the international break.

Gunn had a rocky start to the season at Burnley but has put that behind him. He’s now one of Southampton’s more reliable players, and his position in the starting line-up is surely now undisputed.
