Oriol Romeu continues to impress for the Saints this season and is a player who could be a pivotal part of the midfield for the rest of the campaign.
After joining Southampton in 2015 from Chelsea, Romeu found it difficult to secure a first-team place, usually utilised as a rotational player under Ronald Koeman.
But with midfielders departing over the years, Romeu has found himself as one of the first midfielders on the team sheet in recent seasons, and it’s easy to see why.
With Saints’ defence shaky, he provides real protection and has put in some impressive defensive performances so far this season. He is a steely player and never gives up, and is one of the hardest workers on the pitch in most games.
Although at times he can be unreliable, he is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders at the club, and arguably the best, on this season’s evidence.

Over recent seasons, Romeu has formed a great partnership in midfield with Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg; the combination gives a great balance in the midfield and continues to perform well in the league.
He has put in some standout performances this season, against Manchester United and Liverpool, and is a great asset for the Saints.
He will definitely retain his place in the starting 11 as the season progresses, and I’m sure he will continue to perform.
Furthermore, he is still underrated by some fans and is definitely underrated in the context of the Premier League as a whole.
At the age of 27, the best is still to come for Romeu, and we can expect more of the same from the Spaniard in the future.
