Sadio Mane scored a superb goal for Liverpool against Southampton on Saturday. After the match, he took time to reminisce on his tenure at St Mary’s Stadium, and it’s safe to say that it got a fair few Saints fans a little misty-eyed.

Mane opened the scoring before Roberto Firmino made it two for the Reds in the second half. Danny Ings pulled one back for Southampton, but Jurgen Klopp’s men came away with a 2-1 win.

Following the victory, Mane was apologetic about scoring against his former club, where he spent two successful years. As quoted by BBC Sport, he said:

I’m sorry it is against my old team and sorry I have to score but I’m wearing a Liverpool shirt now. Southampton was a very good step for me, I have big respect for this club.

It is an amazing place. I learned a lot here and they are very nice people.

Reacting to the comments from Mane, these Saints fans expressed their admiration for the Senegal international, and it goes without saying that he is missed by many at St Mary’s…

He was a livewire throughout Saturday’s match and gave Saints plenty of problems. His goal was fantastic, and he can’t be begrudged for celebrating; it was an exceptional strike and an important one, at that.

Many, many Southampton fans will only remember Mane fondly. Of all those who have moved on to pastures new, he is among the more well-liked and respected, and comments such as these show exactly why.
