Southampton find themselves in 19th place after the first two matches of the Premier League season following a narrow 2-1 loss against Liverpool.
The Reds capped a fine week, in which they secured the UEFA Super Cup title, with a victory at St Mary’s Stadium as goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino rendered a late deflection from Danny Ings as insufficient.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men certainly responded positively to their dismal opening-day defeat against Burnley, but they again failed to provide a resolute defensive performance and were also unable to capitalise on some presentable chances in the final third.
These are still early days in the Premier League, and a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion is next up for Saints. However, the fixture list is unforgiving, and such is the nature of the beast that is the top flight, racking up points quickly will be necessary.
So, who has moved up and who has moved down? Do we have a new, best-performing Southampton player at this stage of the season? Take a look at my Power Rankings after Gameweek 2.
