Southampton lost their first game of the new Premier League season 3-0 at a wet and windy Turf Moor.
The hosts had a goal disallowed after Chris Wood found the back of the net after 15 minutes.
A Jack Stephens slip from a long Burnley ball forward allowed the Clarets in but the assistant referee raised his flag for an offside before VAR confirmed the decision.
The Clarets took the lead in the second-half after a long clearance from Erik Pieters was misjudged by Jannik Vestergaard which allowed Ashley Barnes through to slot the ball past Angus Gunn.
It was 2-0 soon after thanks to Barnes again who met a Pieters cross to finish home for his second.
Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson got the third after more defensive frailties from Vestergaard and Bertrand allowed him in to curl the ball home.
On what was a dismal afternoon, here’s how we rated the Southampton players:
Angus Gunn: 5
Wasn’t entirely to blame for the goals but it’s hard to give any higher when Burnley virtually scored with all their shots on target.
Yan Valery: 4
Almost provided for a Che Adams goal early on but that’s as good as it got for the youngster as he was part of a poor defence all round.
Jan Bednarek: 5
As usual the best of the defensive unit although that’s not saying too much today.
Jack Stephens: 3
In a game where Stephens really needed to impress following the arrival of Kevin Danso, the last thing he would have wanted is a slip which almost led to a Burnley goal early on. His nerves continued to show with more mistakes as the game went on.
Jannik Vestergaard: 3
Arguably at fault for two of the goals including the pivotal opener which allowed the flood gates to open.
Ryan Bertrand: 4
Another display that was littered with mistakes as he seemed a yard off in all areas of his game.
Oriol Romeu: 4
With Burnley’s direct approach, the game often bypassed the midfield with Romeu unable to break up the play like he would have wanted to.
James Ward-Prowse: 4
Couldn’t get his foot on the ball often enough and couldn’t impact the game as a result.
Danny Ings: 4
Ings seemed off the pace with his usual accurate through balls going astray and was the first player substituted as a result.
Nathan Redmond: 6
The Saints man-of-the-match in a poor match as he was one of the few players who looked like threatening the Burnley defence.
Che Adams: 5
A debut to forget for Adams although he did nearly give Saints the lead early on, the £15 million pound man didn’t have too many chances after that.
Michael Obafemi (sub): 5
Came on at 1-0 but with his side having their backs to the wall he didn’t have the opportunity to impress.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (sub): 5
Hojbjerg was left out due to an illness for this game and the game was already over by the time he came on.
Sofiane Boufal (sub): 5
Came on with Hojbjerg so couldn’t make an impact in a game which was already over.
