Southampton’s summer window is already well underway and the club have made their first signing ahead of the 2019/20 season.
The club recently announced the arrival of Mali international Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege for an undisclosed fee.
He becomes Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first signing as Southampton manager, after taking over from Mark Hughes back in December 2018.
The Saints clearly need to improve their attack after last season, with Djenepo hopefully goals and assists from the wing – his natural position.
However, Southampton are also lacking at the back and need to improve their defence after conceding far too many goals last term, under Hasenhuttl and Hughes.
A new central defender should be a priority target for Hasenhuttl to strengthen his back four or back five, depending on what system he opts to start with next year.
With that in mind, here are eight central defenders Southampton could target in the coming weeks…
Tomori heavily impressed on loan to Derby County in the Championship from Chelsea. He could come in at St. Mary’s and offer more of a physical presence in the air than Jack Stephens or Maya Yoshida.
Tuanzebe spent the season on loan to Villa in the Championship from Manchester United and helped them secure promotion to the Premier League. Southampton could look to swoop in and offer him a chance to play under Hasenhuttl next season.
The towering Bristol City defender has already been linked with a move to Southampton this summer. The Englishman would be a solid addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad.
Orban worked under Hasenhuttl at RB Leipzig in Germany and could be interested in a reunion at St. Mary’s. Comfortable on the ball, Orban would thrive in the Premier League.
Konsa is an England under-21 international and was a regular for Brentford in the Championship last season. He would be a great prospect for the future at Southampton, as well as being a good option next season.
The experienced Villarreal defender could come in and add some steel to Southampton’s backline. The Spaniard has been a regular in La Liga for a number of seasons.
Cahill is set to leave Chelsea at the end of the month upon the expiry of his contract. Southampton could swoop in and bring him to the club on a free transfer. The veteran has won multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League and two Europa League crowns, among many other trophies, with Chelsea.
Rojo has been out of favour at Manchester United in the last few seasons and could be tempted by a move to Southampton. He has been linked with a switch to the south coast in the past.
