Southampton have much to look forward to going into the 2019/20 campaign with Ralph Hasenhuttl in charge.
The Austrian boss has instilled a new sense of life at St. Mary’s and reinvigorated the players.
After multiple seasons of top 10 finishes in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman and Claude Puel, the Saints have struggled over the past two seasons.
Mauricio Pellegrino started the downwards trend, leaving Mark Hughes to come in and save the side, before he was sacked last December and replaced by Hasenhuttl.
He now has his first chance to bolster his squad and shape it to his will, but there are still players at the club who can play a big part going forward.
Hasenhuttl has improved many of the current crop, who fans can now look forward to truly kicking on next season.
But which of them deserve new contracts? We have our say…
An obvious one to start. Redmond was sensational for Southampton this season and rightly named as the club’s Player of the Season. With two years left on his deal, the club need to tie him down to a long-term contract.
Yoshida’s contract expires at the end of next season and Southampton may not want to lose him on a free. The Japan international has been a loyal servant to the club and is more than capable of being a rotation player next year.
The Danish midfielder has really stepped up to the plate this season and deserved his role as captain for the club. Hojbjerg has a big future at St. Mary’s and is surely due a new deal.
Sims’ current deal expires at the end of next season and Southampton need to tie him down to a new contract. The talented youngster showed glimpses of quality towards the end of the season and would be a big loss on a free transfer.
Bednarek came out from the cold when Hasenhuttl arrived at the club and became an instant fan favourite at the back. The Polish international deserves to be rewarded for his efforts this season at the back.
