Southampton ended their Premier League season with a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town at St Mary’s.
It was clear to see that there was little to play for with both sides lacking a creative spark to seize control of the match.
Southampton took the lead just past the 40 minute mark through a fantastic strike from the edge of the box by Nathan Redmond.
Saints almost doubled their advantage after half-time when a James Ward-Prowse piledriver was pushed onto the crossbar by the Huddersfield goalkeeper Joel Coleman.
The Terriers equalised soon after due to Alex Pritchard robbing Angus Gunn of the ball and slotting into an empty net.
There weren’t too many clear cut chances after that to restore the lead with the spoils ending up shared.
This point leaves Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in 16th place on 39 points with sights now set on improving on that for next season.
For the final time this season, here’s how we rated the players:
Angus Gunn: 3
Gunn’s howler ultimately cost his side two points.
Yan Valery: 5
Not one of Valery’s best performances in an impressive break through season.
Jan Bednarek: 6
Another player whose standards slipped for the final game after a solid campaign
Jack Stephens: 5
A couple of slack passes despite not being tested too much.
Ryan Bertrand: 4
Didn’t offer too much going forward and often lacked concentration at the back.
Oriol Romeu: 6
Not a spectacular performance but didn’t make many mistakes either.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: 6
The captain made some incisive balls early on but had less of an impact as the game went on.
James Ward-Prowse: 6
Almost scored a super goal as his long ranger was pushed onto the crossbar but didn’t show his usual energy an guile.
Nathan Redmond: 7
Scored an excellent goal and was one of the few players trying to make something happen.
Danny Ings: 5
Had a couple of opportunities to pull the trigger but was often to slow to get his feet in order.
Shane Long: 5
Had no impact in the first-half before being substituted at the break.
Matt Targett (sub): 5
Came on at half-time and put a couple of dangerous balls in but failed to alter the course of the game
Charlie Austin (sub): N/A
Didn’t have enough time to warrant a rating in what could have been his last appearance for the club.
Josh Sims (sub): N/A
Also wasn’t on the pitch long enough.
