The spoils were shared between Southampton and Burnley at Turf Moor, after a late Ashley Barnes penalty equalised after Nathan Redmond’s long-range strike.
Jack Stephens was penalised for handball with seconds left on the clock, after pressure from debutant Peter Crouch.
Hassenhuttl hoped his side would produce a smoother performance than that which saw them take just a single point away from St Mary’s against Crystal Palace in midweek. James Ward-Prowse continuing his fine form with his third goal in as many games.
The young Englishman performed admirably at full back for a period on Wednesday and was asked to perform that role again against Sean Dyche’s men. Callum Slattery took Pierre-Emile Hojbjergs place in midfield, and Stuart Armstrong came into the starting lineup to support Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond.
The result sees Southampton stay 16th and Burnley 17th, but most importantly 5 points clear of Cardiff in the relegation zone.
Here is how we rated the players.
Alex McCarthy - 6
Lucky to get away with first-half challenge on Barnes. Made an excellent save in the second. Distribution off.
James Ward-Prowse - 6
Battled well against Charlie Taylor who threatened often down the left flank
Jan Bednarek - 6
Dealt with the physicality of Burnley well, got an assist for Redmond’s goal
Jack Stephens - 6
Conceded the late penalty under pressure from Crouch, will have better days
Jannik Vestergaard - 7
Fantastic block from Barnes, 11 clearances shows his importance
Matt Targett - 6
Good chance to score first half, but otherwise a quiet day for the left-back.
Oriol Romeu - 6
Tough day for Oriol, loose on the ball but not the only one to be guilty of that
Callum Slattery -6
Struggled to find his passing range but worked hard defensively
Stuart Armstrong - 6
Tried a few long-range strikes which often failed to trouble Heaton.
Nathan Redmond - 7
Scored with a great strike. Stepped up as the main threat once Ings went off injured
Danny Ings - 5
Went off injured after 26 minutes, will be hoping the injury is not too serious
Shane Long - 6
Replaced Ings and worked hard as usual, but never looked like scoring
Yan Valery - N/A
Had little impact when introduced, could do nothing about the goal. Will hope to regain a place in the side soon.
Charlie Austin - N/A
Will hope he can earn more minutes by proving himself now Ings is injured.
