Southampton midfielder Steven Davis found the net as Northern Ireland defeated Israel 3-0 in an international friendly on Tuesday evening.
The veteran Saints star lined up in central midfield for Michael O’Neill’s men and wore the captain’s armband as he led his country to a comprehensive victory in Belfast.
Davis opened the scoring for his side with a well-taken goal. After just 13 minutes, the 33-year-old finished high into the Israel net to put his side a goal up and set the tone for what was, in truth, a comfortable win for Northern Ireland.
The hosts doubled their lead in the first-half shortly after Davis’ opener as Stuart Dallas fired home to make it 2-0 heading into the break. Gavin Whyte capped a fine 3-0 win in the second half and sent Northern Irish fans away with a satisfying victory to reflect on.
Davis, who has recently bemoaned his lack of playing time at Saints, will hope to now force his way into Mark Hughes’ first-team plans after enjoying a strong international break with Northern Ireland.
