Alex McCarthy has earned a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad after fighting his way to the number one shirt at Southampton.
The Southampton stopper has been called up with other options for Gareth Southgate, such as Nick Pope and Tom Heaton, both out with injuries.
McCarthy hasn’t simply earned the spot on this fact however, with the Saints stopper putting in a string of impressive performances this season and the back end of last season.

The former Reading goalkeeper ousted Fraser Forster from the number one spot on Boxing Day last year, and has kept it ever since.
Forster has been reduced to a bench player, with McCarthy taking a starting role for Saints.
McCarthy will be in the squad for England’s two opening UEFA Nation’s League fixtures. The Three Lions will take on Spain at Wembley before taking the trip to Leicester to face Switzerland at the King Power Stadium.
