Southampton retained their Premier League status, despite an unfortunate 1-0 home defeat to champions Manchester City on the final day of the season.
Gabriel Jesus ran through for the visitors in stoppage time and won the game with a delightful lob over Alex McCarthy in the Saints goal.
But Swansea City’s 2-1 home defeat to relegated Stoke City means the Southampton survive in the top-flight, while the Swans are consigned to playing second-tier football next season.
Saints did have some good chances of their own in this encounter, with Wesley Hoedt hitting the bar with a header, and Dusan Tadic having a shot cleared off the line late in the second half.
But it was City who took the spoils, while they also reached an unprecedented 100 league points in the process.
This season has been full of ups and downs for everyone associated with Southampton Football Club, and here are my ratings for how our strikers and wingers have got on this season.
Charlie Austin: 7
Southampton’s top goalscorer has been unlucky with injuries this season, but he has taken his chances when he has been on the pitch.
If Saints can keep hold of him and keep him fit, he could play a big part next season.
Manolo Gabbiadini: 6
Gabbiadini found himself overlooked under Pellegrino, but has scored some big goals for Saints when he has been playing.
A striker who needs game time and confidence, Gabbi has shown signs of what he is capable of, and hopefully is another one who could flourish next campaign.
Shane Long: 6
Shane Long might not be the most prolific striker out there, but you cannot fault his work rate.
He constantly puts himself about, chasing down everything and putting defenders under real pressure. But his lack of goals is slightly worrying, so we will have to see what happens next season.
Dusan Tadic: 6.5
Tadic is one of our most creative players, and this has shown with his goals and assists this season.
One thing that he has to work on though is defensive duties. Far too often he will pull out of challenges or not track back, which has led to him being criticised by supporters.
If he could defend as well as attack, and had more consistency in his game, there is no reason why he couldn’t be hitting top marks next year.
Nathan Redmond: 5
Redmond is another player who has had confidence issues, and a lack of game time, especially under Pellegrino. This led to him coming under a lot of criticism from a lot of supporters, including myself.
But recently, he has been very good. His willingness to run at his man and take on players has made him a big part of the final few outings for Saints, and hopefully he can carry this on into next season.
Josh Sims: 6
Sims is another player who featured quite a bit last season, but hasn’t played as much this campaign.
When he has played though, his ability has been clear to see and he could be a big part of the first team for many years to come.
Guido Carrillo: 5
I feel a little bit sorry for this man. £19m and he can’t get into our first team squad? I do wonder what the future holds for him.
Carrillo came in during the January transfer window and it’s fair to say, has been very underwhelming.
His price tag made him seem like a promising purchase, but he just seems very average. The Argentinian has two assists to his name however, including setting up Gabbiadini for a late equaliser at Burnley with a cushioned header.
It will be interesting to see what happens with him during the summer, but I’m just not convinced he will part of Mark Hughes’ plans next season.
Sofiane Boufal: 5.5
Boufal, for me, remains one of our most talented players, but he has massively let himself down, which could cost him his place at the club.
The Moroccan has shown glimpses of what he can do, with his skilful tricks and mazy runs, including a sensational solo goal against West Brom back in October.
But his attitude has led him astray, and with Mark Hughes leaving him out of the squad for the last few games, it will interesting to see where his future lies.
But if he does depart this summer, it will be a shame to see him go. I feel he is a player who has the ability to star at this level, but couldn’t quite get there.
