Premier League eye Southampton vice chairman Les Reed

Premier League eye Southampton vice chairman Les Reed

Southampton vice chairman Les Reed is being eyed by the Premier League to take up the position as Techincal Director.

The Times report that Les Reed features on a shortlist for the job drawn up by recruitment consultants hired by the League. The list also includes Kevin Thelwell, sporting director at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Reed’s departure would be a big blow to Southampton, especially with the club’s current predicament in the Premier League. Reed has been a crucial part of Southampton’s academy graduates breaking through, including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse.

He also had a pivotal role in signing stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Morgan Schneiderlin who all departed the club for big fees.

Reed’s decision will probably be influenced by Southampton’s survival. If the club are relegated to the second tier, Reed may decide to leave St Mary’s for the Premier League. Another factor being Southampton’s new owner, Gao Jisheng, who has maintained a hands-off approach since taking over the club. This may change however if Southampton go down to the Championship.
