Burnley vs Southampton: Last time out
Southampton travel to Burnley on Saturday ahead of another crucial game as Saints hope to boost their Premier League survival hopes.
Neither side are in a particularly promising run of form. Saints still only have one win in their last 13 Premier League games despite winning in their last match away from homeat West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup.
With the game at Turf Moor coming at an important time of the season as it did last season, we take a look back to Saints’ previous visit to the Clarets.
Southampton came away from Turf Moor in January 2017 with a 1-0 defeat despite a dominant performance.
How Burnley lined up:
Heaton (C); Ward, Lowton, Keane, Mee, Boyd, Marney, Hendrick, Defour, Barnes and Gray.
How Saints lined up:
Forster; Cedric, Yoshida, Van Dijk (C), Bertrand, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Long and Redmond.
Southampton were beaten by a central Joey Barton free kick taken from just outside the penalty area. His low-driven strike beat Fraser Forster all too easily, with the goalkeeper failing to get down to his post quickly enough.
Despite dominating possession and play, Saints failed to create any clear-cut chances until they fell behind in the 78th minute.
The first came from a James Ward-Prowse corner, which Van Dijk met brilliantly but only managed to direct straight at Tom Heaton. The second came after a Van Dijk flicked a headed pass into Jay Rodriguez’s path, but the former Saints man shot from just outside the box only for Heaton to parry into the path of the Josh Sims. His shot from just to the right of the goal was denied by a brilliant reaction save from the England international in the dying seconds of the game.
The game ended 1-0 to the hosts and Claude Puel suffered defeat just a few days after he and Saints had struck a 1-0 advantage in the EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
