Southampton claimed a point against their South Coast rivals Bournemouth on Sunday as they held Eddie Howe’s side to a 1-1 draw at the Vitality.
The Saints lacked the quality going forwards to complete a comeback and win the match, but were able to secure a draw after going 1-0 down just before half-time.
There was a moment of controversy early on, when Sofiane Boufal appeared to upend Charlie Daniels in the box, with the referee opting to book the defender for diving.
Wesley Hoedt then slipped whilst turning on the ball, with the Bournemouth counter-attack ending with Ryan Fraser slotting the ball underneath Fraser Forster from just inside the box.
Southampton did find their equaliser in the second-half. Half-time sub Nathan Redmond found Charlie Austin in the box, who clinically dispatched his shot into the back of the net.
Austin then had a great chance to win the game late on but saw his header from six-yards out whistle just over the crossbar.
Here is how we rated the Saints after the game.
Fraser Forster: 7
Made some good saves, including one excellent reflex save, but could have done better for the goal. He also parried a few shots into dangerous areas, a solid display nonetheless.
Jeremy Pied: 6
Had a wobbly start to the match and grew into the game. Wasn’t great, but not awful either.
Virgil Van Dijk: 7
Dominant display from the Saints defender. Won everything in the air, though he should have scored in the first-half.
Wesley Hoedt: 6
This is a weird one. He made a crucial error that cost a goal, but he was also superb for the rest of the game.
In the second-half he made a large number of tackles and interceptions, as well as dominating in the air.
Ryan Bertrand: 8
Was excellent down the left all afternoon. He defended extremely well and was unlucky to not grab a couple of assists from his crosses.
Oriol Romeu: 6
Went missing in spells of the game. Was getting outplayed by the Bournemouth midfield, though he did very well for the goal.
Steven Davis: 5
Was overrun in midfield constantly and his role looked pointless at times. Lemina or Hojbjerg should have started ahead of him, he came off too late.
James Ward-Prowse: 5
Bar a few decent set-pieces, you could be forgiven for forgetting Ward-Prowse was on the pitch in the first-half before his substitution.
Dusan Tadic: 6
Solid performance from Tadic, but nothing special. He played some good football at times, though the final pass was lacking at times.
Sofiane Boufal: 5
He worked his socks off today, which is all you can ask for in terms of commitment. Unfortunately, the rest of his play was poor.
His decision making was diabolical and he gave the ball away far too often. Not his best game by any stretch.
Charlie Austin: 8
Held the ball up well in the first-half and was always on the move looking to create a chance for himself in the box. Took his goal very well, and was unlucky with a header in the second-half.
