Twitter reacts: Virgil goes on strike
Liverpool’s interest in Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk has been the story that every Saints fan, and most of the media, has been keeping their eyes on this Summer.
Today a BBC Solent interview with boss Mauricio Pellegrino has revealed the latest twist in the well-published transfer saga as Southampton near the next step in their pre-season preparations this weekend away at Brentford.
As per usual, the club’s vocal Twitter following have been expressing their thoughts on the situation following the news…

Twitter: #SaintsFC & Mauricio Pellegrino not messing about with Virgil van Dijk – & rightly so. A great player whose popularity is plummeting fast (@SimonPeach)
Twitter: Big fan of the stance #saintsfc have taken. You sign a 6 year contract, grow a pair and man up #stickhiminthe23’s (@pauldawson1972)
Twitter: Pellegrino is handling the situation very well; hasn’t given in & firmly asserting his authority. VVD has to shape up or ship out #SaintsFC (@RickmanKyran)
Twitter: I have said it before and will again, the name on the front of a shirt will ALWAYS be more important than the name on the back #SaintsFC (@jamieenglishsfc)
Twitter: #SaintsFC and Pellegrino handling this as best as possible so far. Only issue for me is Reed’s constant belief players won’t want to leave. (@SFC_Kristian)
Twitter: Don’t hate me BUT,VvD is known as a laid back guy, doesn’t cause an issue. If he is now, maybe it runs deeper. Let’s not be quick to judge.

It’s safe to say Liverpool fans enjoyed the news a fair amount more than those on the South coast…
