Southampton booked their place in the next round of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at St.Mary’s on Wednesday.
The Saints progressed through to the last 16 of the EFL Cup. They will now face Sunderland at St.Mary’s on the week beginning October 24th.
Claude Puel’s side dominated in large spells and looked, by far, the better of the two sides. Crystal Palace rarely threatened during the match, with Alex McCarthy having little to do in goal for the Saints.
The home side were handed the perfect chance to take the lead when Martin Kelly swiped down Shane Long in the box. Charlie Austin then stepped up to confidently stroke home his fourth goal in three games.
The win was then sealed in the second half when 20-year-old Jake Hesketh scored his first senior goal for the club as he pounced on a loose ball in the box.
So, here are our Southampton player ratings from the match…
Alex McCarthy: 7
Very solid performance from McCarthy. He had little to do, but looked assured and reliable when he was called upon.
Cuco Martina: 7
Martina had a fairly quiet game at right-back. He defended adequately, but was unable to get forward to as much effect as he did against Sparta Prague.
Jose Fonte: 8
An excellent performance from the Saints skipper. He dominated the Palace front line in the air and made numerous tackles and interceptions to break up play at the back.
Maya Yoshida: 7
Solid game from Yoshida at centre back. Many claim he always has a mistake in him, but there was no sign of any mistakes against Palace.
Matt Targett: 8
Targett dealt with the threat of Wilfried Zaha extremely well at left-back.
He marshalled him well and made a number of good blocks and tackles to break up Palace attacks.
Harrison Reed: 7
Reed was impressive in the holding midfield role for the Saints. His passing was wayward at times, but he broke up the play well and battled hard in the middle of the park.
Jordy Clasie: 6
Very quiet game from Clasie. He did not get involved in the game as much as he should have done.
Clasie is far better when operating in the holding role, rather than as one of the two central midfielders.
James Ward-Prowse: 7
Like Clasie, Ward-Prowse had a quiet game in most parts. He had some good spells, though, and played some superb passes to spread the play and create chances.
Jake Hesketh: 8
What a memorable night for this young man.
Hesketh scored his first senior goal and was very impressive all night. His movement and weight of pass were to be admired and he looked the real deal.
Charlie Austin: 7
Another goal for that man.
Four goals in three games now for Austin – he’s on fire.
He tucked home the penalty with ease and is oozing with confidence at the moment. Surely he has to start on Sunday?
Shane Long: 7
I feel so sorry for Shane Long at the moment. He’s working so hard and his all-round play has been excellent, but he just can’t get the goal.
Long had two glaring chances during the match, but just could not force the ball home…
Nathan Redmond: 7
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: 6
Dusan Tadic: N/A
